A few weeks ago our phone rang on a Friday afternoon. A homeowner from Brighton had a long weekend coming up, a rented sprayer on hold, and one question for us. “Which store carries Rhino Shield? I want to do the house myself.”
We get some version of that call every spring.

So here is the honest answer. No, you cannot buy Rhino Shield paint in a store or online and apply it yourself. Rhino Shield is only sold and installed through authorized Rhino Shield dealers.
If you are a Michigan homeowner who likes doing your own projects, that answer probably feels a little frustrating. We understand. Below we will explain where you can actually get Rhino Shield in Michigan, why the ceramic elastomeric coating is sold this way, and what your real options are if you still want a DIY project this summer.
The Short Answer: Can You Buy Rhino Shield Paint?
No. Rhino Shield is not sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, paint stores or online. The coating is supplied only to trained, authorized dealers, who prepare the house, apply the primer and finish coat, and issue the 25 year transferable warranty.
That is the whole rule in one sentence. The more useful part is understanding why, because it changes how you should compare your options.
Can I Buy Rhino Shield Paint and Have My Own Painter Apply It?
This one comes up almost as often as the DIY question.
A lot of homeowners already have a painter they trust. Maybe he has done their house twice. Maybe he is a neighbor’s son who does great work.
The answer is still no. Rhino Shield’s own FAQ is clear that a homeowner or a local paint contractor cannot buy the product or apply it. It has to be installed by a Rhino Shield dealer applicator.
This is not a comment on your painter’s skill. A good painter is a good painter. The restriction exists because Rhino Shield is a system with a warranty attached to it, and that warranty only works when the installer is trained and accountable for the job.
Can I Do It Myself If I Already Own a Sprayer?
We hear this a lot from handy homeowners. “I already own an airless sprayer. I have done my deck, my fence and my garage.”
That experience is real, and it matters for a lot of projects. But owning the equipment does not change access to the product. There is simply no retail channel where a homeowner can pick up Rhino Shield.
So can I do it myself? With Rhino Shield, no. With paint, absolutely, and we will talk about that further down.
Where Can I Buy Rhino Shield Paint in Michigan?
If you have been searching “where can I buy Rhino Shield paint” and getting nowhere, this section is for you.
Where to Buy Rhino Shield: Only Through Your Local Dealer
The only place to buy Rhino Shield is through the authorized dealer for your area. Rhino Shield works with independent dealers, and each dealer covers a defined territory.
In Livingston County, that includes Brighton, Howell, Hartland, Fowlerville and Pinckney, the dealer is us. Rhino Shield of Michigan is based at 2150 Pless Dr #7A in Brighton, and we install across more than 40 lower Michigan counties, including Southeast Michigan, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and the Lake Michigan coastline.
So when someone asks where to buy Rhino Shield paint in Michigan, the practical answer is a phone call: (810) 360 6583.
Is Rhino Shield Sold at Home Depot or Lowe’s?
No. You will not find it on a shelf at Home Depot, Lowe’s or any local paint store.
Part of the confusion is the name. Search “Rhino” at a big box store and you will see truck bed liners, sealants and even phone cases. None of those are related to Rhino Shield, the ceramic exterior coating for homes.
If a listing online claims to sell genuine Rhino Shield by the gallon, be careful. It is not coming from the manufacturer, and it will not come with the warranty.
What You Actually Buy When You “Buy” Rhino Shield
Here is the shift that helps most homeowners. When you buy Rhino Shield, you are not buying gallons. You are buying an installed system.
That system includes:
- A full inspection of your siding, trim and problem areas
- Pressure washing and scraping of loose paint
- Wood and stucco repairs where needed
- Caulking around windows, doors and joints
- The Adhesive Primer Sealer coat
- The ceramic elastomeric finish coat
- A final inspection and warranty registration
You can read more about what Rhino Shield is and how each step fits together in our installation process.
Why Rhino Shield Is Only Sold Through Trained Dealers
Some people assume the dealer only model is a markup trick. We get why that thought comes up. But after more than 2,000 installations, we can tell you the reasons are practical, not marketing.
Reason 1: It Is a Two Coat System, Not One Can of Paint
Rhino Shield is applied in two parts. First, an Adhesive Primer Sealer that bonds to the substrate. Then the ceramic finish coat that bonds to the primer.
Each surface behaves differently. Old wood clapboard, chalky aluminum siding, brick and vinyl all need the right approach. If the primer does not bond properly, the finish coat cannot do its job, no matter how good it is.
Reason 2: Film Thickness Has to Be Controlled
Rhino Shield dries 8 to 9 times thicker than ordinary latex paint. That thickness is a big part of why it flexes with the house through Michigan winters instead of cracking.
But thickness has to be right. Too thin and you lose the benefit. Too heavy in the wrong spot and it can sag or trap problems underneath.
What “Mils” Means in Plain English
A mil is one thousandth of an inch. Paint thickness is measured in mils.
Our crews check the wet film with a small gauge as they go. It looks like a little comb pressed into the fresh coating. It tells the applicator right away whether that section is on spec. It is a simple tool, but knowing what the number should be on each surface comes from training and a lot of houses.
Reason 3: Prep Decides Whether It Lasts 5 Years or 25
We say this to every homeowner. The coating is only as good as the surface under it.
Before any coating goes on, the house is pressure washed, loose paint is scraped, rotted wood is repaired and gaps are caulked. You can see what that looks like on our surface prep and repairs page.
Michigan Prep Problems We See Most
On older homes around Livingston County, especially those built in the 1970s and 1980s, our crews keep running into the same things:
- Chalky aluminum siding that leaves powder on your hand
- Soft fascia boards hiding behind gutters
- Failed caulk around windows after years of freeze thaw cycles
- Mildew on north facing walls that never get full sun
- Peeling on the south side where the sun bakes the paint every summer
None of these are rare. But each one has to be handled before coating, or the problem comes right back through the new finish.
Reason 4: The Warranty Is Issued and Serviced by the Dealer
Rhino Shield comes with a 25 year transferable warranty against cracking, chipping and peeling. It is not prorated.
That warranty has two parts. Rhino Shield stands behind the product. The dealer stands behind the labor. If something goes wrong in year 12, there is a local company to call.
A DIY job, even with a perfect product, would have neither part. That is the real reason the system cannot be sold over the counter.
Our Experience: The Calls We Get From DIY Minded Homeowners
Let us go back to that Friday afternoon call, because it is a good example of how these conversations usually go.
The homeowner had a ranch house in Brighton. The south side was peeling badly, and he had already repainted it about six years earlier. He was tired of it. He had heard about Rhino Shield and figured he could skip the installer and do it over a long weekend.
We respect that. A lot of our customers are people who built their own decks and finished their own basements.
On the call, we walked him through what the weekend would actually look like:
- Prep alone on a typical house takes many hours of washing, scraping and repairs before any coating goes on
- Ladder work on the gable ends and around the eaves
- Michigan weather windows, where you need the right temperature, no heavy dew and no rain for about a day after coating
- A spring or fall weekend can disappear fast when the forecast changes
Then we told him the honest part. If he wanted to do it himself, a quality exterior paint and good prep would serve him well. He would just need to plan on repainting in 5 to 7 years.
He ended up asking for a quote so he could compare both paths side by side. Some homeowners in his spot choose us. Some choose a good paint job and do it themselves. Both are fine decisions, as long as you know what you are getting.
If You Really Want to DIY: Your Honest Options
No competitor seems to want to talk about this part. We will.
Store Bought Elastomeric Paint
Elastomeric coatings are available at paint stores and can be tinted. They work well on masonry and stucco, where their flexibility helps bridge hairline cracks.
The tradeoffs are real though. They usually go on thinner than a professional system, they carry a shorter warranty, and they are not built on the same ceramic microsphere formula. We cover this more in our post on what paint is comparable to Rhino Shield.
Premium 100% Acrylic Exterior Paint
For wood, aluminum and fiber cement siding, a premium 100% acrylic exterior paint is usually the best DIY choice.
With careful prep, expect somewhere between 5 and 10 years depending on your siding, sun exposure and how well the surface was cleaned and primed. The south and west sides will usually wear first.
What You Give Up With DIY
- The thicker film build of a ceramic coating
- A matched primer and finish coat system
- A trained crew that has seen hundreds of Michigan houses
- A transferable 25 year warranty
- Your weekends
DIY vs Professional Rhino Shield: Side by Side
| Factor | DIY premium paint | Rhino Shield by a dealer |
| Who can buy it | Anyone | Dealer only |
| Typical film build | Standard paint film | 8 to 9 times thicker than latex |
| Prep done by | You | Trained crew |
| Warranty | Manufacturer product warranty only | 25 year transferable, not prorated, against cracking, chipping, peeling |
| Repaint cycle | About every 5 to 7 years | Designed to last up to 25 years |
| Your time | Several weekends | None on site work |
What Does It Cost If You Cannot Buy It by the Gallon?
Since you cannot buy Rhino Shield paint by the gallon, the real question is what the full installed job costs.
For a typical home with about 2,000 sq ft of wall area, Rhino Shield usually runs $13,000 to $18,000. That works out to roughly $6.50 to $9.00 per sq ft.
A standard latex paint job on the same house might be $5,000 to $9,000. That looks cheaper until you count how many times you repeat it. Every 5 to 7 years over 25 years adds up to roughly $25,000 to $45,000.
We currently offer up to 25% off plus 0% financing, which makes the comparison worth running at least once. For a full breakdown, see our guide on Rhino Shield cost in Michigan or our pricing page.
Why “Price Per Gallon” Is the Wrong Question
Homeowners sometimes ask us for a Rhino Shield price per gallon. We understand the instinct. It is how you would compare paint at the store.
But on a professional job, material is a small slice of the total. Prep, repairs, labor, equipment and the warranty make up most of it. Comparing gallons would be like comparing roofs by the price of a bundle of shingles.
Is Rhino Shield Just Elastomeric Paint With a Brand Name?
We have seen this claim on old forum threads, so let us answer it calmly.
Yes, Rhino Shield belongs to the elastomeric coating family. That part is true.
What separates it is everything around the formula:
- Ceramic microspheres built into the coating
- A film thickness far beyond ordinary paint
- A dedicated primer sealer system
- Independent lab testing, including work done with BASF
- Wind driven rain resistance testing
- Dealer installation and a 25 year transferable warranty
Plenty of elastomeric products are good at what they do. Rhino Shield is simply a different category of service, because the product, the application and the warranty come together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you buy Rhino Shield paint online?
No. Rhino Shield is not sold online to homeowners. The coating is supplied only to authorized dealers, who install it and register the warranty. If you see a website selling it by the gallon, it is not an approved source, and the product would not be covered by the 25 year transferable warranty.
Where can I buy Rhino Shield paint near Brighton, MI?
Near Brighton, the authorized dealer is Rhino Shield of Michigan at 2150 Pless Dr #7A in Brighton. We serve Brighton, Howell, Hartland, Fowlerville, Pinckney and the rest of Livingston County, plus more than 40 lower Michigan counties. Call (810) 360 6583 to schedule a free estimate.
Can I buy Rhino Shield and have my painter apply it?
No. Only trained Rhino Shield dealer applicators can buy and apply the coating. It has nothing to do with your painter’s skill. The system relies on a matched primer and finish coat, controlled film thickness and a dealer backed warranty, which a third party contractor cannot provide.
Does the 25 year warranty cover a DIY application?
No. The warranty covers both the product and the labor, and it is issued through the authorized dealer who installed it. Since Rhino Shield cannot be bought or applied by homeowners, there is no DIY version of the warranty. A store bought paint will only carry that manufacturer’s own product warranty.
Is there a DIY version of Rhino Shield?
There is no DIY version of Rhino Shield. The closest options you can buy yourself are store bought elastomeric coatings for masonry and stucco, or a premium 100% acrylic exterior paint for wood and siding. Both can look great with good prep, but expect to repaint every 5 to 7 years.
How long does a professional Rhino Shield job take?
Most homes take several days from start to finish, depending on size, siding type, repairs and weather. Prep and repairs usually take the most time. Michigan weather can shift the schedule, since the coating needs the right temperature and dry conditions. Your estimator will give you a realistic timeline before work begins.
Can I buy a small amount for touch ups?
Touch ups are handled through your dealer, not sold to homeowners. If a spot gets damaged, for example from a ladder or a mower, call us and we will take care of it. That keeps the finish matched and protects your warranty coverage.
